OZZY On Wife's Cancer Battle: 'We Needed Two Treatments — One For The Cancer And One For Me'
November 23, 2002In an revealing interview published in yesterday's edition (Nov. 22) of USA Today, Ozzy Osbourne spoke about his wife's cancer battle and his ongoing drinking problem, which has resurfaced as a result of Sharon Osbourne's disease.
"I've never had so many high highs and low lows," Ozzy said. "When Sharon was diagnosed with colon cancer, it blew my doors off. If you hear someone else has cancer, you feel sympathy. When it lands on your doorstep, it hits you like a sledgehammer. We needed two treatments — one for the cancer and one for me. The best thing I can do is find a therapist to help me deal with this."
"I came from a time when a person plus cancer equaled death. Nobody survived. I love my wife more than I love anything in the world. She's my mentor, my very breath. She's the force behind the dark one. People can call me the prince of darkness, but I'm a very sensitive person. When you think you're losing your partner, you freak out, whether you're the dark one or not."
To cope, Ozzy began a morning regimen of exercise. He also resumed drinking.
"I started drinking a lot of beer again," Ozzy revealed. "The alcoholic inside me thought it was a good idea. But then reality hit me. Sharon needed my help. She's the one with cancer, and she was putting me to bed every night. I woke up one morning and said, 'You've got to stop.' The alcoholic inside me will use any disaster as an excuse to drink. I'm not good with these things. I shake."
Ozzy takes antidepressants plus medications for tremors and anxiety. As for his liquor intake, "it's going fine," he said with a chuckle. "I've come to a decision. I won't watch TV anymore, because it freaks me out. But I'm going to let myself take a few drinks a day."
The Osbournes intend to honor their commitment for a 20-episode second season of the hit MTV series "The Osbournes", with the first 10 shows airing through February and the second batch cued after an unspecified break. A third season has not been discussed.
""I'm a professional show business person, so I wouldn't mind doing another season," Ozzy said. "But who knows? This one could be a giant flop. I'll still have my music. I've had an exceptional career in rock 'n' roll for 35 years. As long as the fans want to hear me and I've got breath in my lungs, I'll just carry on being Ozzy."
